How to Start a Relationship With Jesus: A Simple, Biblical Guide

At some point in life, almost everyone pauses long enough to ask a deeper question: How do I truly find God? Not religion, not rules, and not surface-level beliefโ€”but something real. Something personal. Something that actually fills the emptiness that nothing else seems to reach.

Itโ€™s a question Iโ€™ve asked myself. Like many others, I spent time chasing what the world offersโ€”success, experiences, distractions, and temporary satisfaction. For a while, those things seemed enough. But eventually, the truth became clear: none of it could fill what I was searching for.

Thatโ€™s because we were never designed to be filled by the world. We were created to be filled by God.

The beginning of that relationship starts with something simple, but often difficultโ€”honesty. Not honesty with others, but honesty with yourself. At some level, we all recognize that we fall short. We try to do life on our own, make our own way, and define our own direction, but something always feels incomplete. Scripture speaks directly to that reality:

โ€œFor all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.โ€ โ€” Romans 3:23

This isnโ€™t meant to produce shame. Itโ€™s meant to create awareness. Itโ€™s the starting point of understanding that we need something more than ourselves. And the good news is thisโ€”you donโ€™t have to fix everything before coming to God. You come as you are.

From there, the next step is understanding who Jesus truly is. He is not simply a historical figure or a moral teacher. He is the Son of God, sent to restore what humanity could not fix on its own. The message of the gospel is rooted in love, not condemnation:

โ€œFor God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Sonโ€ฆโ€ โ€” John 3:16

Jesus didnโ€™t come to point out your failuresโ€”He came to rescue you from them.

As that truth begins to take hold, it leads naturally to a response. Scripture calls this repentance, but that word is often misunderstood. Repentance is not about achieving perfection or becoming someone entirely different overnight. It simply means changing directionโ€”turning away from the path you were on and turning toward God.

โ€œRepent ye therefore, and be convertedโ€ฆโ€ โ€” Acts 3:19

Itโ€™s not about having everything figured out. Itโ€™s about choosing a new direction.

That choice leads to one of the most important moments in a personโ€™s lifeโ€”accepting Jesus not just as someone you believe in, but as Lord. There is a difference between acknowledging who Jesus is and surrendering your life to Him. Scripture describes this moment clearly:

โ€œIf thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesusโ€ฆ thou shalt be saved.โ€ โ€” Romans 10:9

This is where the relationship becomes real. Itโ€™s no longer about adding God into your existing lifeโ€”itโ€™s about placing your life in His hands. Itโ€™s a shift from control to trust.

But this relationship doesnโ€™t end with a single moment. It begins there. From that point forward, it becomes something that grows daily. Like any relationship, it develops through time, attention, and consistency. And it doesnโ€™t have to be complicated.

It starts with simple stepsโ€”reading Scripture, praying honestly, and seeking Godโ€™s direction in everyday life. There is no need for perfect words or polished routines. What matters is a willing heart and a desire to know Him more.

Over time, something begins to change. Not always instantly, and not always dramatically, but steadily. Your perspective shifts. Your priorities adjust. What once felt important begins to lose its grip, and something deeper takes its placeโ€”purpose, direction, and a sense of peace that doesnโ€™t depend on circumstances.

This is not about becoming religious. Itโ€™s about being transformed.

Life wonโ€™t suddenly become easy, but it will become grounded. You will begin to walk with direction instead of confusion, and with peace instead of constant striving.

Scripture gives a powerful picture of this invitation:

โ€œBehold, I stand at the door, and knockโ€ฆโ€ โ€” Revelation 3:20

God is not distant. He is not waiting for you to reach Him. He is already reaching out to you.

So the real question is not whether God is calling.

The question is whether you will answer.

๐Ÿ’ญ Reflection

  • What have I been trying to fill my life with that isnโ€™t lasting?
  • Have I been trying to โ€œfix myselfโ€ before coming to God?
  • Am I ready to move from knowing about Jesusโ€ฆ to truly trusting Him?

๐Ÿ™ Prayer

Lord, I come to You honestly, just as I am. I know Iโ€™ve tried to fill my life with things that donโ€™t truly satisfy. Help me to turn toward You and trust in what You have done for me. Teach me to surrender my life into Your hands and to walk with You daily. Fill the emptiness in my heart with Your presence, Your truth, and Your peace. In Jesusโ€™ name, Amen.
