Heresy and Modern-Day Heretics

There are times when speaking the truth will offend people. This may be one of those times.

We are living in an age where it has become increasingly popular to convince godly people to embrace godless ideas by twisting the Word of God. False teachers are no longer confined to obscure corners of society. Through social media, podcasts, television, politics, and public platforms, they have gained enormous influence. They often speak with confidence, intelligence, and charisma, but beneath the polished words is a dangerous poison that leads people away from the truth.

The Apostle Paul warned us this day would come:

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.” — 2 Timothy 4:3 (KJV)

Many people no longer seek truth. Instead, they seek validation. They search for teachers who will tell them what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear. Rather than allowing God to transform their lives, they look for someone who can reinterpret Scripture in a way that justifies their sin.

The serpent used the same strategy in the Garden of Eden.

“Yea, hath God said…?” — Genesis 3:1 (KJV)

Satan did not begin with an outright denial of God. He began by questioning God’s Word. That strategy has not changed. Modern heretics often do the same thing. They twist Scripture, remove context, redefine biblical terms, and present half-truths that sound compassionate and enlightened while leading people further from God.

Jesus Himself warned us:

“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” — Matthew 24:24 (KJV)

The danger is not always found in those who openly reject Christ. The greater danger often comes from those who claim to speak for Him while distorting His message.

The truth is that religion, by itself, cannot save anyone.

No amount of church attendance, good works, charitable giving, rituals, traditions, titles, or religious activity can earn a place in Heaven. If salvation could be earned, Christ would not have needed to die on the cross.

When Jesus told Nicodemus that he must be born again, He was revealing a profound truth:

“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” — John 3:3 (KJV)

Being born again is not about improving the old self. It is about dying to the old self and becoming something entirely new through Christ.

The old life cannot be patched up.

The old life cannot be modified.

The old life must die.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

The world teaches self-improvement.

Jesus teaches self-surrender.

The world says, “Follow your heart.”

The Bible says:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” — Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)

The world says, “Live your truth.”

Jesus says:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6 (KJV)

The world says, “You deserve better.”

The Gospel says, “You deserve judgment, but Christ offers grace.”

This is why heresy is so dangerous. It offers people a version of Christianity that requires no repentance, no surrender, no transformation, and no cross. It promises salvation without holiness and Heaven without obedience.

But the Gospel has never been about making people comfortable.

It is about making dead men live.

It is about taking sinners and transforming them into sons and daughters of God through the finished work of Jesus Christ.

As believers, we must be discerning. Every message, every teacher, every politician, every influencer, and every preacher should be measured against the Word of God—not against popularity, emotions, or cultural approval.

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” — 1 John 4:1 (KJV)

The answer to modern heresy is not anger.

The answer is truth.

Know the Word.

Study the Word.

Live the Word.

When counterfeit teachings arise, do not be moved by persuasive speech or public approval. Stand firmly upon the unchanging truth of Scripture and the saving power of Jesus Christ.

The serpent is still asking, “Did God really say?”

Our response must always be, “Yes, He did.”

And His Word remains true.

💭 Reflection

Have you ever found yourself drawn to a teaching because it made you feel comfortable rather than because it was biblically true? God’s truth is not always easy to hear, but it is always life-giving. Examine what voices are influencing your thinking. Are they leading you closer to Christ or simply making the world seem more acceptable? The greatest defense against deception is a deep and personal knowledge of God’s Word.

🙏 Prayer

Heavenly Father, give me wisdom and discernment in a world filled with competing voices. Help me recognize truth from error and guard my heart against teachings that contradict Your Word. Create in me a hunger for Scripture and a desire to know You more deeply. Let me never trade Your truth for comfort, approval, or convenience. Strengthen me to stand firm in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to boldly proclaim Your truth with both conviction and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
